Spring is full of surprises up at Cardrona and Treble Cone. September and October are when the mountains get interesting, more snow than you'd bet on, more sun than you'd expect, and a playground built for both. The more days you've got up here, the better your odds of catching it.

Is spring a good time to ski or ride at Cardrona and Treble Cone? 

September has historically delivered some of the biggest snowfalls of the whole season, so don't be fooled into thinking spring means the snow's done. Fresh powder still turns up when you least expect it, and when it combines with classic spring conditions, one day up here is never enough.

The flipside of surprise powder days is "spring corn", snow that firms up overnight then softens just enough to be grippy, forgiving and genuinely fun to ski or ride. Pair that with bluebird skies and longer daylight hours, and you've got some of the best conditions of the whole year. Room to play: more of the mountain, more of the day. 

What should you pack for spring skiing in NZ? 

Spring is a pack-for-anything kind of season, so layers are non-negotiable. Warmer, longer days mean more daylight to play with, but cold fronts still roll through when you least expect them. 

Here's your spring kit checklist: 

• Layers: merino thermal, light mid, shell - ditch or add as the day warms. Our friends at Mons Royale have all your needs covered! 

• Sun protection: SPF50+ face sunscreen and a high-SPF lip balm - reapplication is a must 

• Eyewear: sunnies for the deck, plus low-light and bright-light goggle lenses for on snow 

• Gloves: a lighter pair is handy once it warms up 

• Neck buff: sun, wind and style points, all in one 

• Hydration and snacks: spring laps are thirsty work 

• Warm-temp wax: your skis or board will thank you later.

Surprise #1: Someone else can do the driving. Skip the drive altogether - return transport from Queenstown and Wānaka is available from $20pp, so you can leave the car at home and get straight into it.

Always double dip 

One pass gets you two very different mountains, and spring is the perfect time to make the most of that. Cardrona's groomers and terrain park are ideal for playing around and building confidence, while Treble Cone's big lines and backcountry-style terrain are there when you want to push it. Conditions tend to be at their most consistent across both in spring, so there's no need to pick a side.

Playtime's not over, until spring says it's over. September is jam-packed with world-class events - the Jossi Wells Invitational, Snow League, She'll Be Right, and pop-up DJs turning up all over the mountains when you least expect them. You've got front row seats to some of the best skiers and riders in the world going all out. You never know who you'll end up on a chairlift with.
