A Beginner's Guide to Skiing & Snowboarding at Cardrona
Why Cardrona is Perfect for Beginners

Easy progression to the McDougall’s Chairlift, which includes gondola cabins for a smooth, enclosed ride — perfect for easing into lift travel or just taking in the views
Just 1 hour from Queenstown or 40 minutes from Wānaka, Cardrona is easy to get to, with convenient shuttle options from both towns. Whether you’re gliding down Skyline - our top-to-bottom beginner trail - or taking in the stunning scenery from the Gondola, your first ski trip is going to be unforgettable. Best Time to Visit Cardrona
Cardrona’s ski season runs from 14th June to 5th October 2025, but the best time for beginners depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. Here’s a breakdown:
📅 Mid June to July – A great time to visit as the season gets underway and snow conditions build through July. It’s usually busier during the NZ school holidays (28 June – 13 July 2025), so consider mid-week visits for more space to learn.
⛷️ August to Early September – Typically the most snow and best conditions, with a great balance of soft, fresh snow and bluebird days.
☀️ Late September to October – Softer spring snow and warmer days, making for a fun and relaxed skiing experience (September 20th – October 5th is NZ school holidays in 2025).
💡 Pro Tip: Visit mid-week outside weekends and school holidays for fewer people and more time to practice on the slopes!
