Wānaka Ski Team (WST)

Our mission: Develop resilient athletes who achieve and unlock their ski racing goals and potential. WST has had huge success throughout New Zealand due to our commitment to excellence, and we continue to build on our results. Our fully tiered race training programme accommodates athletes at all levels - from entry-level juniors to seasoned FIS-level competitors.

What's Included

Wānaka Ski Team Programmes

Focus on Technical Development: All programmes emphasise the improvement of skiing techniques through technical development and gate training.

Guidance from Experienced Coaches: Each programme is led by experienced coaches who provide personalised feedback and training. This includes video analysis and tailored coaching to help athletes progress.

On-Snow Training with Lift Line Priority: All programmes include on-snow training with priority access to lifts, maximizing time spent on the slopes.

Goal Setting: Season-long goal setting is a part of the Junior and Youth Team programmes, helping athletes work towards specific objectives throughout their training.

What's Included

Wānaka Ski Team Camps

WST Alpine Racing Camps combine technical excellence with flexible programming, allowing athletes aged U8-U16 to commit to either intensive holiday periods or extended training blocks throughout the winter season. Athletes can access premium training at Cardrona and Treble Cone, benefiting from WST's expert coaching methodology that balances skill development with enjoyable, competitive experiences.

Elite alpine race training: for all skill levels, with flexible commitment options from 5-days to intensive 3-week blocks

Real race experience: through mini competitions and pathways into national-level racing

Development: on and off the snow including goal setting, performance tracking, and video analysis

FIS Programmes

Designed for FIS-age athletes who are committed to advancing their ski racing careers. Our FIS programme offers flexible training options to meet the diverse needs of athletes. We aim to offer enriching opportunities such as workshops with international guests, training alongside World Cup athletes, and deep video review sessions, providing invaluable insights to enhance the training experience.

Designed to prepare you for FIS system: Focusing on developing skills, refining techniques, and nurturing competitive spirits to excel on the international stage.

Full-time training: With flexible training days, allowing for adjustments based on snow conditions, weather, athlete fatigue, and race schedules.

For competitive athletes: These programmes are aimed at serious racers who wish to compete at a high level, both nationally and internationally.

Asked Questions

We recommend signing up as soon as possible, at least 4 months in advance. While we don't have a specific cutoff date, we do have limited availability!

Wānaka Ski Team has access to dedicated training arenas at both Cardrona and Treble Cone depending on each team’s training needs. 

For the 2025 season, Wanaka Ski Team will take athletes born in 2019 and older. 

Age group is based on year of birth, please see below 2025 age groups: 

U8 2018 to 2019  U10 2016 to 2017  U12 2014 to 2015  U14 2012 to 2013  U16 2010 to 2011  FIS 2009 and older 

U12 - U16: 

  • Slalom and Giant Slalom skis or a very good kombi ski 

  • A helmet and back protector are compulsory for all training and racing 

  • Physical training clothes and running shoes

U6, U8 and U10: 

  • Good carving skis 

  • A helmet and back protector are compulsory for all training and racing 

  • Physical training clothes and running shoes
